The Aim

The foundations of success project aims to work with a groups of young boys and/or girls in all education centres. It aims to give pupils an opportunity to gain multiple qualifications and become high level performers in the game of basketball. The concept is to take these students on a journey from learning to become competent competitive sports performers, to being responsible sports leaders and peer mentors to younger/primay school pupils.

The Process?

Part 1Nationally recognised qualifications

  • This is a 60 hour project which aims to combine the junior sports leader award with ASDAN by using basketball as a medium of application.
  • The first 30 hours will entail students learning the game of basketball. From the fundamental principles to becoming players who will understand structured plays.
  • This group will also enter to compete in the Birmingham or Solihull schools basketball league.
  • They will also undergo their level 1 referee qualification which will allow them to be paid to officiate school and recreational basketball games.

Part 2

  • The second 30 hours will entail students studying for their junior sports leader award (JSLA).
  • They will then undergo a course in ‘take six mini basketball’ (a short 1 day course teaching a type of basketball specifically designed for primary school pupils) .
  • As part of the climax of their sports leader award, students will go out to primary schools and apply their leadership skills in basketball related sessions.
  • This will account not only for ASDAN peer mentoring hours but for their JSLA demonstration hours also.

Outcomes and BenefitsMultiple qualifications

By the end of this 60 hour course, students will have obtained:

  • 6 ASDAN Credits which can go to a half of their Certificate of Personal Effectiveness (COPE) course.
  • An EBBA Level  1 referee qualification
  • A qualification as a mini basketball trainer
  • A level 1 Junior Sports Leader Award

In addition to this and most importantly, without realising students who undergo this project will have:

  • learnt the concept of self discipline through having to learn the fine art of one activity.
  • learnt responsibility through having to work with younger pupils.
  • become very competent at SOMETHING!
  • got to compete in a league as a team against other schools in their region.
  • had an opportunity to be scouted to play for Birmingham.
  • watched a basketball game and be introduced to professional basketball players.
  • spent less idle time 'off timetable' burdening mentors and more time doing a positive healthy activity.
